ASIA MARKETs on WEDNESDAY MORNING
(By: D’ORIGIN ; Source: BN, CNBC, Reuters, WSJ, FT)
•Asia Stocks, Yen Near One-Week Highs as BOJ Day Dawns; Oil Jumps
•Small majority tip more stimulus in Japan; Fed seen on hold
•Australian government debt tracks rebound in Treasuries
»Markets
Asian stocks and the yen held near one-week highs ahead of much-anticipated central bank decisions in the U.S. and Japan. Regional bonds climbed with oil.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was little changed following three days of gains and Japanese shares fell after the S&P 500 Index barely moved for the second day in a row.
The yen was steady versus the greenback amid the countdown to the Bank of Japan’s policy statement and with futures indicating a 22 percent chance of an interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve.
Yields on 10-year Australian bonds fell three basis points after gains in Treasuries. Oil jumped toward $45 a barrel on prospects major producers will agree to cap output.
A narrow majority of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expect the BOJ to announce an expansion of its easing program on Wednesday, following a comprehensive review of the costs and benefits of Japanese monetary policy.
The Fed is seen as less of an unknown, with bets on an increase this session reduced over the past month after U.S. employers added fewer jobs than forecast and growth in services slowed.
Besides the BOJ and Fed reviews, Malaysia updates on consumer prices Wednesday. Japan reported a bigger-than-expected 9.6 percent drop in exports from a year earlier for August.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was down less than 0.1 percent as of 9:25 a.m. Tokyo time, while Japan’s Topix index fell 0.4 percent. Benchmarks in Australia and New Zealand added 0.2 percent, while South Korea’s Kospi index declined 0.1 percent.
Futures on Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index and the MSCI Taiwan Index rose 0.1 percent, while contracts on the S&P 500 were steady.
»Currencies
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index, a gauge of the greenback’s strength, was little changed near its highest level since July.
The yen was little changed at 101.67 per dollar following a two-day gain of 0.6 percent. The won appreciated 0.3 percent.
»Bonds
Australian government debt due in a decade yielded 2.09 percent, while rates on similar maturity New Zealand notes fell for the first time in four sessions, slipping five basis points to 2.57 percent.
Ten-year Treasury yields were little changed after declining by two basis points on Tuesday to 1.69 percent.
»Commodities
Crude oil climbed as much as 2.5 percent to $45.14 a barrel ahead of a government update on U.S. stockpile levels. Inventories fell by 7.5 million barrels last week, the American Petroleum Institute was said to have reported late on Tuesday ahead of the official figures.
Comments from Algerian Energy Minister Noureddine Bouterfa are also supporting prices, with OPEC seeking ways with other producers to cut crude supplies by 1 million barrels a day to re-balance markets and stabilize prices, he said.
